Reflections

It all started when…

I noticed at an early age that my Father had oil paint all over his hands … and shirt. Similar to his uncle Thomas Bulman, my Father was a skilled artist (and a great piano player). Perhaps it was part of their Irish DNA or heritage. I began drawing in old copybooks making up war games. it was an era free of electronic video games were you depended on your imagination for entertainment.

First attempts with Oil painting were difficult and sometimes frustrating. Later, PBS aired artists including Bob Ross and his relaxing approach to this medium. His free and loose style influenced many artists and encouraged others to pick up the brush. His calm voice could also lure you into an unplanned nap.

I have explored multiple painting mediums over the years from oils to acrylic, watercolor, gouache and pastel. I find each medium has its own unique qualities, advantages and limitations. Each medium dictates my approach and brush application but none more so then watercolor. Here the highlights have to be preserved throughout the creative process.

So, what is my preferred art medium? Hmmm! We will need to discover that together. I seem to get immersed in them all. Currently, I am participating member with other artists at the Greater Norristown Art League., the Woodmere Art Museum, the Wayne Art Center and the Peace Valley Plein Air painters group.
